VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Fire crews responded to a two-alarm structure fire late Tuesday night that damaged 16 apartments in the Indian Lakes area of Virginia Beach.

Dispatchers said the fire was reported around 11:30 p.m. in the 5300 block of Maize Drive. When first units arrived on scene, they reported heavy smoke showing through the roof.

Within four minutes, the incident was upgraded to a two-alarm fire with additional crews being called.

Fire officials said the flames quickly spread into the attic space spanning the entire building.

The fire was marked under control at 12:49 a.m. but crews remained on scene to assist residents and to put out any hot spots into the morning hours.

Fire officials said all 16 apartments were damaged from water or fire, and 15 of the 16 apartments were occupied at the time of the fire. 22 adults and nine children have been displaced, according to officials.

There were no injuries reported.

Two civilians were evaluated but refused further treatment. The American Red Cross was called to assist with the displaced residents, many of whom did have renter’s insurance.

Officials say the fire appears to be accidental, but the cause is still being investigated.

It was a very busy night for Virginia Beach firefighters. They also responded to a large fire at a two-story building on General Booth Boulevard around 3 a.m. that destroyed four local businesses.
